Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is like an ultrasound of the eye using white light.

OCT: Optical Coherence Tomography

13-04-2022

Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is a technique for obtaining sub-surface images of translucent or opaque materials at a resolution equivalent to a low-power microscope. It is effectively optical ultrasound, imaging reflections from within tissue to provide cross-sectional images.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. With OCT, each of the retina’s distinctive layers can be seen, allowing your ophthalmologist to map and measure their thickness. These measurements help optometrists with diagnosis and provide treatment guidance for glaucoma and retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

OCT does not provide a 3D image of the retina and underlying tissues. Rather, it provides a cross-sectional view.

A modern eye exam should include both wide angle retinal photography and Optical Coherence Tomography, in addition to the standard suite of tests and assessments. An exam that includes only one risks missing diagnosing serious eye diseases and disorders.
